A new law in the United Kingdom prevents foreign sex offenders from receiving asylum.

The UK Home Office has announced that foreign sex offenders will be barred from seeking asylum in the UK under a new law that gives powers to exclude any foreign national convicted of sex crimes from protection under the Refugee Convention, even if their sentence is less than 12 months.

According to the BBC, this means the Home Office will be able to deport convicted offenders and equate them with terrorists, war criminals, and other criminals deemed a danger to society. This tougher immigration approach will be seen, ahead of Thursday's local council elections, as an attempt to prevent Labour voters from abandoning the party in favor of Nigel Farage's Reform Party.

This comes after several cases were revealed in which foreign sex offenders avoided deportation from the UK or were granted asylum. The law will apply to migrants seeking asylum and current refugees, who could lose their residency status if convicted of sex crimes.

Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said, "We are restoring order to a broken asylum system, mired in delays and dysfunction for far too long, and strengthening our system to ensure the rules are respected and enforced. Sex offenders who pose a danger to society should not be allowed to benefit from refugee protection in the UK. We are strengthening the law to ensure these horrific crimes are taken seriously."
