In a challenge to the two-party system, Elon Musk announces the establishment of a new political party.

American billionaire Elon Musk announced the formation of a new political party, weeks after his heated dispute with US President Donald Trump.

In a tweet on his social media platform, X, Musk announced the formation of the "America Party," which he said would challenge the two-party system.

However, it remains unclear whether the party is officially registered in the United States. Musk, who was born outside the United States and is therefore ineligible under US law to run for president, has not revealed the identity of the party's leader.

Musk first raised the idea of forming a political party during his public dispute with Trump, after leaving his position in the Trump administration and engaging in a heated public debate with his former ally.

During that period, Musk posted a poll on his X platform asking users whether a new political party should be established in the United States.

Referring to this poll, Musk wrote in his Saturday post: "2 to 1, they want a new political party, and you'll get it!"

He added: "When it comes to bankruptcy, excess, and corruption, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy." He continued: "Today, America's Party was founded to give you back your freedom."

As of Saturday, the Federal Election Commission had not released documents indicating the party's official registration.

While there are prominent figures outside the traditional two-party system in American politics, it is difficult to gain strong enough national support to pose a real threat.

In last year's presidential election, candidates from the Libertarian Party, the Green Party, and the People's Party tried unsuccessfully to prevent Trump or his Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, from winning.

Until recently, Musk was a staunch supporter of Trump, appearing alongside him at campaign rallies last year and bringing his four-year-old son to meet him in the Oval Office.

He was also Trump's main financial backer, spending $250 million to help him return to the White House.
