Kane leads Bayern Munich to a 3-0 win over Chelsea in their European opener.

Bayern Munich opened their Champions League group stage campaign with a valuable 3-1 victory over visiting Chelsea at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday evening, in the first round of the new edition of the tournament.

The Bavarian team started with an advantage, as they took the lead through an own goal scored by Trevoh Chalobah in the (20) minute, before Harry Kane added the second goal from a penalty kick in the (27) minute. Chelsea responded quickly by reducing the difference through Cole Palmer (29), but Kane returned again to score the third goal in the (63) minute and secure his team's victory.

The match witnessed the Spanish referee, Jose Maria Sanchez, disallowing a goal for Chelsea after consulting VAR technology.

The encounter brought back memories of the 2012 final, when Chelsea won their first continental title at the expense of Bayern Munich in the heart of Munich, before the Bavarian team responded in the 2020 edition by eliminating the Blues in the round of 16 with a crushing 7-1 aggregate score.

According to the tournament's new format, the top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, while teams from ninth to twenty-fourth place enter a play-off, making every point more important in the race for qualification.
