Taiwan: Initial death toll from lake floods in eastern Taiwan rises to 14.
At least 14 people were killed and 124 others were missing on Tuesday after a natural dam collapsed on a river in eastern Taiwan, which was hit by devastating Typhoon Rajasa, local authorities on the island announced on Wednesday.
"As of 7 a.m. Wednesday, 14 people have been confirmed dead and 18 others injured," said Lee Kuan-ting, a public information officer for the Hualien County government.
Heavy rains brought by Typhoon Rajasa triggered a landslide that caused a natural dam to collapse, holding back water from a lake that had formed in the upper reaches of the Matayan River.
The dam collapse caused the lake to flood, collapsing a bridge, flooding a nearby village, and trapping hundreds of people, according to authorities.
