"Trump 2028" hats spark controversy, Jeffries comments.
The recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and the four leaders of Congress witnessed a remarkable incident when "Trump 2028" hats appeared on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office, according to House Democratic Minority Leader Hakim Jeffries.
Jeffries told CNN that Trump did not attempt to hand the hats to him or Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, but they were suddenly placed on the desk in front of them. "It just randomly appeared in the middle of the meeting," he said. "It was very strange. I looked at the hat, then at Vice President J.D. Vance, and said, 'Don't you see a problem with that?' He said, 'No comment.'"
Trump posted photos of the meeting on his Truth Social platform, showing the leaders sitting around a desk with their hats in front of them.
Speculation about the "third term"
The incident reignited controversy over Trump and his allies' repeated talk about the possibility of running for a third presidential term, despite the US Constitution prohibiting such a move. Last August, Trump said he "probably" would not seek a third term, but added, with a laugh, that he would like to.He also indicated at the time that it was not yet time to choose his successor in 2028, but described his deputy, J.D. Vance, as the "most likely" to be the political heir to the MAGA movement. He also floated the name of current Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who ran in the 2016 election, believing he could form a strong ticket with Vance.
As for Vance, he said in an interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" that he is focused on his current duties, emphasizing, "I am a vice president trying to do a good job for the American people, not an heir to the movement."
