A sea of people beneath her room in Copacabana... and Shakira is shocked.

Colombian superstar Shakira was surprised just before giving a free concert on Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana beach on Saturday night by thousands of fans who gathered under her hotel room to greet their beloved singer.

In a video that has gone viral on social media in recent hours, Shakira appeared on her balcony greeting the "sea of people" who had gathered to see her.
Brazilian officials predicted that the concert would attract around two million people to one of the world's most famous waterfronts.

"This is a dream"

Shakira, currently on her "Women Don't Cry" world tour, named after her 2024 album, explained that she expects the Copacabana concert to be the biggest of her career. Speaking in Portuguese in a television interview, she said, "For me, this is a dream. I've always dreamed of singing on this beach because I think it's a magical place," adding that she learned Portuguese before English.

This show follows similar performances by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga last year, which were also attended by huge crowds who danced on the sandy expanse. These free concerts are part of the city council's attempt to boost economic activity after the Carnival and New Year celebrations and before the month-long St. John's Day celebrations in June.

Shakira's show could generate around $155 million, according to a study by the city council and Riotor, the city's tourism company, thanks to the influx of tourists and money spent in restaurants, hotels and shops, the Associated Press reported.
