North Korea urges US to stop military threats
North Korea on Sunday demanded that the United States cease its military threats against others if it wants to ensure its own territorial security and integrity.
The head of the policy bureau of North Korea's Ministry of Defense issued a statement carried by the North's official Korean Central News Agency, claiming that "ensuring the security of the US mainland" depends on abandoning "military threats and hostile attempts" against other countries, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.
The statement emphasized that the US military continues to promote the idea of a North Korean threat to the US mainland, while simultaneously strengthening its military arsenal to an unprecedented extent.
The statement read: "Recently, the US military has been insisting on inciting the existence of a 'threat' from North Korea to the US mainland, while attempting to increase its weapons buildup on a larger scale."
The statement added that US military officials have "raised problems with North Korea's self-defense measures to bolster its nuclear force on several occasions, and have unhesitatingly made provocative statements hinting at the possibility of war with North Korea," according to Yonhap.
Citing the recent US intercontinental ballistic missile test, the statement said the "irrational way of thinking" is that US military actions are defensive, while North Korea's actions are viewed as a threat.
The statement added: "The US's unreasonable military threat, blackmail, and show of military force have created and steadily escalated the 'external threat' to the US mainland."
The statement also said North Korea is making "continuous and practical efforts" to develop a war deterrent against the security instability caused by the US nuclear buildup.
