The legend attacks Haaland because of Marmoush: You will never become like Ronaldo and Messi

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney, who now works as a television pundit for the BBC, believes Manchester City's Erling Haaland will never become the next Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.

City were awarded a first-half penalty against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final after trailing 1-0 to Eberechi Eze's goal.

Haaland, who had not scored in his first five appearances for City at Wembley, looked set to break his curse, but he handed the ball to Marmoush, who made a brilliant save from City goalkeeper Dean Henderson to save the Egyptian striker's first penalty for City.

Rooney said he felt the occasion might have affected Haaland.

He added: "He's a world-class striker, but when we're talking about players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, it's impossible for them to give the ball to another player."

He continued: "That's what differentiates these players from Haaland or Mbappé and these players. They want to score in every game."

He concluded: "When Haaland misses chances, I think you can see it affects him. Maybe the idea of taking a penalty at Wembley was difficult for him. You never know, he's human."

Haaland has scored 30 goals for City in all competitions this season, but has missed three of the seven penalties he has taken for the team.
