Trump: We will be able to reach more trade agreements before next August.
US President Donald Trump said on Sunday, June 29, that Washington would be able to reach more trade agreements before next August.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said, "China has been taking advantage of us in every way and needs our companies now more than they did two years ago," noting that "the understanding with China is a very good thing."
"China is going to pay a lot of tariffs, and we have to do something about the trade deficit," he said.
When asked about China hacking into the US communications system, stealing intellectual property, fentanyl, COVID, and all of these things, Trump responded, "How do you negotiate with a clearly evil actor?" "Don't you think we're doing that to them? Yes, we are. We do a lot. That's the way it is in the world. It's a nasty world."
Trump said he doesn't expect to have to extend the July 9 deadline he set for countries to reach trade agreements with the US to avoid higher tariffs.
"I don't think I'll need to," he added. "I can do it. It's not a big deal."
These comments come after Trump indicated on Friday that the administration has the freedom to adjust the deadline as it sees fit, including extending or shortening it.
Regarding Canada, Trump said US trade talks with Canada would be on hold "until they give up some of their taxes."
