"More detailed": British plan to recognize a Palestinian state

The British newspaper The Telegraph reported on Monday that Prime Minister Keir Starmer will unveil a plan this week to recognize a Palestinian state to ease pressure within his Labour Party.

The newspaper reported that Starmer will present "his most detailed plan yet for what would need to happen to Palestine to achieve recognition, as well as discuss British efforts to improve aid delivery to Gaza to combat famine."

While London's recognition of a Palestinian state is expected to remain conditional on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of hostages, according to the Telegraph.

Measures to End the Suffering in Gaza
Earlier Monday, Starmer's office announced that the British Prime Minister agreed with US President Donald Trump on the need for urgent action to end the suffering in Gaza.

The office added in a statement issued after Starmer and Trump met in Scotland: "The two leaders began discussing the horrific scenes in Gaza and agreed on the need for urgent action to end the suffering that has reached unprecedented levels," according to Reuters.

The statement also stated, "Humanitarian aid must be allowed to enter on a large scale and with speed. They declared their commitment to working together to end the misery and hunger, and to continue to press for the immediate release of the remaining hostages."

Starmer and Trump renewed their call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

At least 142 countries
It is noteworthy that French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday that his country would recognize a Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly in September.

According to an AFP tally supported by verification processes, at least 142 of the 193 UN member states now recognize the self-declared state of Palestine in 1988.
