Legendary Liverpool striker calls for Mohamed Salah to be given a 'leadership role'

Legendary former Liverpool striker Ian Rush has praised Reds and Egypt star Mohamed Salah, describing him as an "inspiration" for the club's young players.

In a statement to the Liverpool Echo, Rush said: "Without a doubt, Salah is a pivotal part of the team. I was delighted when he signed a new contract. In the first half of last season, he was amazing, and in the second half, he focused more on assists."

Rush has also supported the idea of Salah taking on a new role next season, one previously held by Trent Alexander-Arnold before his move to Real Madrid.

Last season, Alexander-Arnold served as vice-captain, with Virgil van Dijk holding the armband. However, Rush, Liverpool's all-time leading scorer, is confident Salah can fill that void and assume the role of Liverpool's vice-captain.

Rush stressed that Salah "100 percent deserves to be vice-captain. I think Van Dijk is doing his usual job. He's amazing and leads the team as he should."

Speaking about Salah, Rush added, "He's a player who works on his weaknesses and builds on his strengths."

He continued, "What I like about him now is that since his shoulder injury in 2018, he's built up a stronger physique that makes him less susceptible to re-injury. His determination to succeed is clear, and when you talk to him, you'll find he's always willing to learn. Perhaps the best thing about him right now is that he's helping young players too."

Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has become one of the greatest players to have graced Anfield.

Now 33, Salah is the club's third-highest goalscorer, having helped the Reds win two league titles and a Champions League title, among other domestic honours, since joining from Roma.
