Strange photo: What is Salah doing in Cameroon's presidential elections?

A strange story spread on social media on Sunday after a photo of Egyptian star Mohamed Salah appeared on the voter list at a polling station in the town of Ngaoundéré for Cameroon's presidential election.

Cameroonians voted on Sunday in a presidential election that is expected to be won by incumbent President Paul Biya, 92, who has been in office for 43 years.

As Mohamed Salah prepared to celebrate qualifying for the 2026 World Cup at Cairo International Stadium on Sunday, a photo of the Liverpool star posing for a picture on the electoral roll at a polling station in the town of Ngaoundéré went viral on social media.

German network Deutsche Welle reported that Salah's photo is already included in the electoral rolls and appears on the official website of ELECAM, the body responsible for organizing the elections. The photo of the Egyptian striker appeared in the register of a polling station in the town of Ngaoundere, north of the Adamawa region, in the center of the country.

After verification, Salah was indeed registered in the voter database, except that the username "Azert Qsdfg" is the first five letters of the first two lines of a computer keyboard in French.

The photo sparked a lot of laughter online, and also raised concerns about the reliability of Cameroon's electoral rolls.

While the user data that appeared as Salah did not match the data of the Egyptian star, who was born on June 15, 1992, "Azert Qsdfg" was born in August 1985.
