A US official confirms: The Ukrainian delegation has agreed to the peace plan.
Despite anticipation of the completion of talks between Kyiv and Washington, a US official confirmed that Ukraine had agreed to the terms of a possible peace agreement.
The official told ABC News on Tuesday that the Ukrainians had agreed to the revised draft peace plan .
However, he clarified that "there are some small details that need to be worked out."
"Tangible results achieved"
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed cautious optimism. He said his country sees "many prospects" for peace following the US-Ukrainian talks held in Geneva last Sunday. In a post on X following a phone call with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Zelensky wrote that Kyiv sees "many prospects that could make the path to peace a reality."He also explained that "tangible results have been achieved, but there is still a lot of work to be done."
For his part, Starmer confirmed that the Geneva talks had made progress between the US and Ukraine toward a revised plan. In a speech to the House of Commons today, he stated that the initial draft of the plan contained unacceptable points, despite including some crucial elements, such as security guarantees from the United States and its partners.
He also stressed that Britain is clear on the basic principles, namely the need to preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty and to be able to defend itself in the future.
Lavrov and a hint of rejection
In contrast, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov clarified that his country had not received the revised plan, but hinted at the possibility of rejecting it if it did not reflect the spirit of the US-Russian talks held last August in Alaska. He stated, "If what was agreed upon during the Alaska summit is disregarded, the situation will be completely different," in a veiled reference to rejection. An informed source revealed that the updated agreement does not include a cap on the size of the Ukrainian army (the initial version stipulated reducing the army to 600,000). The source also indicated that the clause granting amnesty for crimes committed during the Russian-Ukrainian war will not be included in the new version of the peace proposal.
It should be noted that the first version of the American plan stipulated that Kyiv would give up the Crimean Peninsula and the Donbas region (east of the country), while the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions (south) would be demilitarized.
It also included Ukraine abandoning its dream of joining NATO, reducing the size of its armed forces, and refraining from deploying any international troops on Ukrainian soil—demands long insisted upon by Russia. It called for general elections in Ukraine within 100 days of a ceasefire.
Zelensky is expected to visit the United States in the next few days to finalize the plan, according to Rustam Omerov, Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council.
