On Monday, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing his administration to study whether certain branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, such as those in Lebanon, Egypt, and Jordan, should be designated as foreign terrorist organizations and specially designated global terrorists.

The White House added in a statement, "President Trump is confronting the transnational network of the Muslim Brotherhood, which fuels terrorism and destabilization campaigns that are hostile to American interests and U.S. allies in the Middle East ."

The Trump administration accused Muslim Brotherhood branches in those countries of supporting or encouraging attacks against Israel and US partners, or of providing material support to the Palestinian armed group Hamas, according to Reuters.

"President Trump is confronting the transnational Muslim Brotherhood network, which fuels terrorism and destabilization campaigns against the interests of the United States and its allies in the Middle East," the statement says.

The United States' designation of the group as a foreign "terrorist" organization allows Washington to take punitive measures against the group, such as freezing any assets it may have in the United States and preventing its members from entering, according to AFP.
