Korea and Japan are considering submitting a joint bid to host the 2035 Asian Cup.
South Korea and Japan are considering submitting a joint bid to host the 2035 Asian Cup, officials announced Friday, in a move that would revive cooperation between the two countries after they co-hosted the 2002 World Cup.
A Korean Football Association official told AFP that the country's football authorities are considering various options, and that co-hosting with Japan is "one of the possible strategies."
He added: At this stage, joint hosting is not impossible, noting that the plans are still in their initial stages and must first be approved by both governments.
In contrast, the Japanese federation told AFP that it is conducting various studies on the possibility of submitting a hosting bid.
An official from the federation added: We are considering applying to host the Asian Cup, and it is true that we have discussed the option of joint hosting with South Korea and other countries, but no concrete decision has been made yet, and we will inform you when we officially launch our bid.
The Asian Football Confederation is scheduled to announce the host of the 2031 and 2035 editions at the same time, in 2027.
South Korea has not hosted the Asian Cup since 1960, while Japan hosted the last edition in 1992. The next edition will be held in Saudi Arabia in 2027.
South Korea and Japan previously hosted the World Cup finals more than two decades ago in 20 different stadiums, a historic first for the Asian continent.
