Images of the largest Sri Lankan giant sapphire, valued at $400 million
Sri Lanka has announced the discovery of a massive purple star sapphire, the largest ever found. It is estimated to be worth at least $400 million.
Known as the "Pure Star of the Earth," this gemstone weighs 3,563 carats. Displayed in Colombo, the capital city, it features a six-rayed star pattern, making it a rare gem among rubies.
Gemstone expert Ashan Amarasinghe confirmed, according to the Mirror newspaper, that this gem is the largest documented gem in the world, noting its uniqueness and distinctive star shape.
The ruby was discovered in 2023 near Ratnapura, known as the "City of Gemstones." After purchasing it along with other stones, its owners did not realize its true value until two years later, prompting them to officially document and have it certified by two specialized laboratories.
International appraisers estimate the stone to be worth between $400 million (£298 million), making it one of the most expensive gemstones ever discovered.
Sri Lanka is world-renowned for its rare rubies, which are distinguished by their unique colors, purity, and natural luster.
The unveiling of the "Pure Star of the Earth" comes at a time when the gem-making world is witnessing the emergence of rare gems that have shattered records at international auctions.
These include the "Regent of Kashmir" blue sapphire, which sold for $9.5 million, and the "Black Star of Eve" and "Eye of Hope" green beryl, both of which have set Guinness World Records.
