A mysterious statue sparks controversy in Türkiye; municipality removes it after residents' outrage.
A mysterious statue recently erected inside a public park in the Turkish city of Bursa sparked widespread controversy and division among residents, after many considered its shape to be "unfamiliar" and incompatible with the nature of the place or the family atmosphere of the park, which ultimately prompted the Bursa municipality to intervene and make a decision to remove it following a public vote.Over the past few hours, the statue has become the talk of the town and social media in Turkey, after residents widely shared its pictures, accompanied by sarcastic and angry comments, while some saw it as having a "gloomy" character and arousing negative feelings among park visitors, especially children.
The statue, which was placed by the Nilüfer district municipality in one of the public parks, is white and appears as a sculpture of a child or a thin-featured person, almost bald or without hair, with the upper part of his body exposed, while he holds a book or a small bag in his hands.
Despite the lack of any official explanation from the municipality regarding the artwork's artistic concept or the message it symbolizes, its mysterious form was enough to spark widespread controversy, as residents questioned the purpose of placing it in a location frequented daily by children and families.
Several residents of the neighborhood described the statue as "frightening" or "psychologically depressing," while others felt that its design did not match the aesthetic character of the garden, demanding that it be removed or moved to another location more suitable for contemporary artworks.
As criticism intensified, the neighborhood representative, Sevda Bayraktar, intervened, deciding to bring the controversy directly to the residents by posting a picture of the statue on her Instagram account and asking the residents to express their opinions in the comments.
Within a short time, hundreds of comments poured in on the post, with most participants expressing their rejection of the statue, considering that it does not add any aesthetic value to the place, but rather arouses surprise and aversion.
According to what Bayraktar announced later, about 97% of those who participated in the vote supported removing the statue from the park, which prompted the Nilüfer municipality to respond to the residents' wishes and make a decision to remove it.
The neighborhood representative stressed that the residents’ objection does not mean that they reject art or diminish the value of the artist who designed the statue, but rather it relates to the work’s lack of harmony with the place where it was placed.
She explained that the residents of the area would have preferred that the municipality focus on improving basic services within the park, such as increasing green spaces, planting trees, providing waste containers, in addition to paying attention to the public facilities that visitors need on a daily basis.
She also criticized the failure to consult with the residents or the neighborhood administration before the statue was erected, arguing that artworks in public places should take into account the nature of the surrounding community and the taste of the residents.
Despite the great uproar caused by the statue, the Nilüfer municipality has not yet revealed the identity of the artist who designed it, or the artistic and intellectual background on which the work was based.
The local authorities also did not clarify whether the statue would be moved to another location within the city, or whether it would be permanently discarded, which increased the mystery that has surrounded the story since its beginning.
The controversy surrounding the statue has reignited the debate in Turkey about the limits of art in public spaces, and the importance of considering public taste when creating artworks displayed in streets and parks, especially in residential and family areas.
