France: The mutation of the "Hanta" strain on the infected ship is unconfirmed.

Stéphanie Rist, France’s health minister, announced on Tuesday that it remains uncertain whether the strain of hantavirus linked to the outbreak aboard the cruise ship Hondus has undergone any mutation, though officials say current indicators are providing cautious reassurance.

Speaking before the French National Assembly, Rist explained that health authorities are still awaiting the complete genetic sequencing of the virus, which is necessary to determine with certainty whether any mutation has occurred. She acknowledged that there are still significant unknowns surrounding the virus, emphasizing that while early findings are somewhat reassuring, no definitive conclusions can yet be drawn.

The outbreak has been linked to the Andean strain of hantavirus, a rare but serious virus previously associated with outbreaks in parts of Argentina. French health officials are reportedly consulting Argentine authorities for guidance, particularly in light of a notable outbreak involving the same strain that occurred there in 2019.

According to the World Health Organization, there are currently no indications that the strain detected aboard the ship shows unusual characteristics beyond the fact that it emerged in an unexpected location. The WHO noted that the available evidence does not currently suggest a broader public health threat.

The organization has confirmed nine cases connected to the outbreak and has urged strict isolation of suspected cases as a precautionary measure. Health experts also warned that additional infections could still emerge due to close contact among passengers before the virus was detected and containment measures were implemented.

Despite this, international health authorities stressed that there is no evidence at present of wider community transmission beyond the affected group. Monitoring and testing efforts continue as officials work to better understand the outbreak and rule out any significant mutation risk.

The incident has drawn increased attention because hantavirus infections are relatively uncommon, and the Andean strain is one of the few known variants capable of limited person-to-person transmission under certain conditions. This makes the sequencing results especially important for determining whether the outbreak represents a contained event or requires broader international health precautions.
