Erdogan is seeking to build new prisons in order to continue the oppression of the people and attempts to imprison politicians to a large extent. Turkey has more than doubled its prison construction rate compared to the four years prior to the 2016 coup attempt.
And the Ahval website quoted Placer as saying that satellite images revealed the construction of 131 new prisons between July 2016 and March 2021, compared to 64 prisons.
In the aftermath of the attempted coup, the country declared a two-year state of emergency and granted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the power to fire hundreds of thousands of public servants and military personnel, and arrest tens of thousands of opponents.
"The massive expansion of the country's prison network is fueling the campaign and the accompanying human rights violations," Blaser said.
