China and Russia strengthen strategic partnership to counter "US influence"
Russia and China signed an agreement on Thursday to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership. They pledged to raise cooperation to a "new level" and "firmly" confront "unilateral and bullying" actions. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasized to his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, that the two countries should be "close friends."
In a lengthy joint statement, the two presidents affirmed that they would strengthen relations in all areas, including military cooperation, and "coordinate to counter the US policy of bilateral restraint with Russia and China."
The two countries emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine can only be resolved by eliminating its "root causes," a phrase Russia has often used when saying it was forced to go to war to prevent Ukraine's possible accession to NATO, a move opposed by Kyiv and its Western allies.
Putin and Xi also expressed their "strong opposition to imposing a hostile approach toward Russia and China on third countries in various regions of the world, as well as to tarnishing the reputation of both countries."
