Bone Glue": A Chinese Invention That Treats Fractures in 3 Minutes

Successful trials on 150 patients, increasing the possibility of it becoming an alternative to traditional metal implants.

A research team in eastern China's Zhejiang Province has announced a new medical innovation: a "bone glue" capable of treating fractures and reattaching bone fragments in just three minutes, in a move described as a scientific breakthrough in the world of orthopedic surgery, according to NDTV .

The new medical innovation is called Bone-02, and the head of the medical team, Dr. Lin Xianfeng, was inspired to create it after observing the way clams attach to underwater bridges, according to the Global Times .

He explained that this glue is characterized by its ability to quickly and accurately fix the implant, even in a blood-rich environment, with the added advantage that it is naturally absorbed by the body during the healing process, eliminating the need for subsequent surgical procedures to remove screws or metal plates.

Laboratory tests have confirmed that Bone-02 has achieved good results in terms of safety and effectiveness. In one trial, the procedure was performed in less than 180 seconds (three minutes), while traditional treatment methods required a long time to implant steel plates and screws.

According to laboratory tests, the glue was able to achieve a bond strength of more than 400 pounds, a shear strength of approximately 0.5 megapascals, and a compressive strength of nearly 10 megapascals. Trials on more than 150 patients have shown successful results, raising the possibility that it could become an alternative to traditional metal implants used to stabilize bones. Scientists say it may also reduce the risk of infection.

It's worth noting that attempts to develop bone-bonding materials date back to the 1940s, but they failed due to biocompatibility issues. However, the new Chinese innovation could open the door to a medical future that reduces complications and infections and shortens surgical procedures.
