The Taliban releases a British couple after months of detention.

A British couple detained by the Taliban in Afghanistan in February have been released and flown to Doha following Qatari mediation, an official familiar with the matter told Reuters on Friday.

He added that the Qatari authorities had been "in contact with the Afghan authorities for several months and worked in close coordination with the British government and the couple's family to secure their release."

Diplomats said British couple Peter and Barbie Reynolds were released after months of detention in Afghanistan on undisclosed charges.

This comes as part of broader efforts by the movement to gain international recognition for its government, years after it regained power in the country.

Peter and Barbie Reynolds, 80 and 75, have lived in Afghanistan for 18 years. They ran an education and training organization in Bamiyan province in central Afghanistan and decided to stay after the Taliban seized power.

The case highlights Western concerns about the Taliban's actions after they ousted the US-backed government in a lightning offensive in 2021.
