After a daring theft, the Louvre Museum transfers jewelry to the Bank of France.
After a daring daylight robbery last week exposed its fragile security, the Louvre Museum has transferred some of its most valuable jewels to the Bank of France, RTL radio reported Saturday.
Unnamed sources told the radio station that the transfer of some of the valuable pieces from the museum's Apollo exhibit, which houses jewels dating back to the royal era, took place on Friday under special police escort.
The Banque de France, which houses the country's gold reserves in a massive vault 27 meters underground, is located just 500 meters from the Louvre Museum, on the right bank of the Seine.
8 precious pieces
It is noteworthy that on October 19, thieves stole eight valuable pieces, valued at approximately $102 million, from the Louvre collection .
The robbery exposed security lapses as they broke into the world's most visited museum using a crane and smashing an upper-floor window during opening hours, then fled on motorcycles.
The theft reverberated around the world, sparking deep reflection on the situation in France due to what some considered an "insult" to the country.
