Fan jailed for racially abusing Rashford

A football fan in Spain has been given a suspended prison sentence after directing racist insults at Barcelona striker Marcus Rashford during a Spanish league match against Oviedo last September.

The Oviedo County Court confirmed the individual's conviction for committing a crime "against the dignity of persons on racial grounds".
The fan received a suspended 9-month prison sentence, a common measure in Spain for sentences of less than two years.

He was also fined more than 900 euros, banned from entering football stadiums for 3 years, and prohibited from working in the fields of education, teaching, sports, and entertainment-related professions for 3 years and 9 months.

The Spanish League Association "La Liga" stated that this ruling represents the eleventh judicial ruling related to racist abuse in the Spanish First Division.
In June 2024, three people were sentenced to eight months in prison after being convicted of racially abusing Real Madrid forward Vinicius Junior in May of the previous year, marking the first conviction for racism in a football stadium in Spain.

Rashford, 28, joined Barcelona on loan from Manchester United in the summer and started and played the full 90 minutes in his side's 3-1 win over Oviedo in September at the Carlos Tartier Stadium, where he provided an assist.

In March 2022, a teenager was sentenced to six weeks in prison for racially abusing Rashford on social media after the Euro 2021 final. He had been subjected to online racist abuse following England's defeat to Italy, along with teammates Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, after all three players missed penalty kicks in the losing match.
