Trump declares victory over the climate change "hoax"
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday evening that he had triumphed over what he called the "clue" of climate change, following statements by billionaire Bill Gates that climate warming would not lead to the destruction of humanity.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform: "We just won the war against the climate change hoax. Finally, Bill Gates admitted he was totally wrong on this issue." He added, "It took courage to do so, and we are grateful for it."
Microsoft co-founder Gates said in a lengthy memo this week that climate change "will not lead to the demise of humanity," a major shift in the 70-year-old billionaire's views on the issue.
Gates added that although climate change has "serious consequences, people will still be able to live and thrive in most places on Earth for the foreseeable future."
Gates acknowledged that critics might accuse him of hypocrisy because of his group's large carbon footprint, or say the memo was "a thinly veiled way of saying we shouldn't take climate change seriously."
But he noted significant progress in reducing emissions so far, and said he was optimistic that future technology would contribute even more to this.
Trump has long been a skeptic on environmental issues, and in a speech to the United Nations General Assembly in September, he called climate change "the greatest scam ever."
Republicans have rolled back green policies since returning to power in January.
