emerge in the death of a fan who fell from the stands at the opening stadium of the 2026 World Cup.
A football fan tragically died at the famous Azteca stadium on Saturday evening after falling from a great height while attempting to jump between the stands before Mexico's friendly match with Portugal. The stadium, known as "Estadio Panorte" for sponsorship reasons, hosted its first match since undergoing extensive renovations in preparation for the World Cup. The match was marred by a tragic incident when a man tried to jump from the VIP section of the second stand to the first stand, according to Reuters. The man fell into the stadium's ground-floor parking lot while climbing the outer wall. First aid teams provided him with assistance after his fall, but he died. Security officials in Mexico City later reported that the man was drunk. The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office stated in a statement published on the X website: “The Mexico City Attorney General’s Office expresses its deep regret for the death of a person on Saturday, March 28, inside the Panorte Stadium, before the start of the Mexican national team’s friendly match.” He added: From the beginning, officials from the Public Prosecutor's Office, forensic experts, and officers from the Investigations Police arrived at the scene of the incident to begin the necessary investigations. The area was cordoned off, the scene of the incident was secured, and evidence was collected by experts specializing in forensic science, photography, and forensic medicine. The statement continued: "Furthermore, CCTV footage from the stadium and its entrances is currently being analyzed, and statements are being collected from individuals who were at the scene, with the aim of accurately reconstructing the sequence of events and determining potential responsibility. Similarly, forensic autopsy procedures are underway to precisely determine the cause of death, as well as the individual's medical condition at the time of the fall." Despite the tragic incident, the friendly match was held and ended in a 0-0 draw. Widespread reports indicated that many fans and security officials were unaware of what had happened until after the match had ended. The match was a pivotal moment for the stadium, given that it had been undergoing a renovation project for many years in preparation for the World Cup, as the Azteca Stadium is one of three stadiums that will host matches in Mexico. The stadium will host Mexico's opening match against South Africa, and is scheduled to host a total of five World Cup matches.
