2026 World Cup Awards: FIFA Yields to National Team Pressure

FIFA has yielded to the demands of the countries participating in the 2026 World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico regarding financial incentives.
The British newspaper "Mirror" reported that FIFA will increase the financial prizes offered to the 48 teams participating in the World Cup this summer in the United States, Canada and Mexico, in response to comments from some countries that expressed concerns about spending.
Some national federations around the world have expressed concerns about the high operating costs of the tournament compared to the previous tournament organized by Qatar in 2022.

Increased bonuses for the 2026 World Cup

The British newspaper "The Guardian" confirmed last February that some European teams were worried about the possibility of incurring financial losses as a result of their participation in the tournament held in North America, as officials expected the costs to be much higher than they were in Qatar four years ago.

For its part, FIFA has held a dialogue with national federations around the world on this issue, and now intends to increase the value of the financial prizes for participating countries, as well as the development funding allocated to the World Cup for all 211 FIFA member associations.

Discussions are still ongoing regarding increased funding, and an improved package is scheduled to be approved at the FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver on Tuesday.
A FIFA spokesperson told the British news agency: "Ahead of the FIFA Council meeting in Vancouver, Canada, on April 28, 2026, FIFA confirms that it is in talks with federations around the world to increase financial shares."

This includes a proposed increase in the financial contributions that all teams qualifying for the 2026 World Cup will receive, and an increase in development funding available to all 211 member associations.

2026 World Cup Awards

Last December, FIFA approved record prize money of US$727 million (currently equivalent to £537 million).
This reward is distributed among the 48 teams that qualify for the finals, including US$50 million (£37 million) for the winning team.
