Shooting during a Trump event: Secret Service reveals details

The U.S. Secret Service has revealed new details about the shooting incident during the White House Correspondents' Dinner attended by President Donald Trump.
The Secret Service said in a press release that the shooting occurred outside the dinner hall where Trump was present, noting that Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were "okay" and that one suspect was in custody.
He confirmed that the people involved in the incident have not yet been identified, adding: "We are currently working on assessing the situation."

A U.S. official told the Washington Post that a member of the Secret Service was injured and is receiving treatment at a hospital, adding that the shooter is alive and receiving treatment at a hospital.

Trump had commented on the Truth Social platform: "It was an extraordinary night in Washington. The U.S. Secret Service and law enforcement agencies did a fantastic job, acting quickly and bravely."

A video showed Secret Service agents escorting some attendees, including Trump, out of the venue at the Hilton Hotel in the U.S. capital.
Other footage from the White House Correspondents' Dinner showed attendees, including Trump, taking cover during the event after hearing a loud noise.

Guests attending the party rushed to take cover under tables after hearing gunshots, while security personnel, brandishing their pistols and rifles, positioned themselves around the platform where Trump had been sitting before he was escorted out of the venue.
US media outlets confirmed that the shooting occurred outside the venue hosting the concert.

The Associated Press reported that between 5 and 8 shots were heard before the hall was evacuated, and Fox News confirmed that security forces "neutralized" the shooter in the hotel lobby before he entered the hall.
Police surrounded the Hilton Washington Hotel, and helicopters circled overhead.
NBC reported that the hotel had been evacuated.

CNN confirmed that Trump was unharmed, noting that Secret Service agents refused to resume the ceremony with the president present.
Later, the New York Times confirmed that he had left the hotel.
For the first time during his second term, Trump is attending the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner.

Trump arrived Saturday evening at the event, which usually brings together political leaders, celebrities, and journalists. Trump received close attention during the event, which is organized by the White House Correspondents' Association.

Later, he said in a post on Truth Social: "Law enforcement has asked us to leave the building in accordance with standard procedures, and we will do so immediately," noting that he would hold a press conference in 30 minutes from the White House press conference room.

He continued: "The First Lady, the Vice President, and all members of the Cabinet are all in good health. We will speak to you in half an hour."
He continued: "I spoke with all the representatives responsible for the event, and we will reschedule it within 30 days."

  2. Feels like security gaps are still a serious issue if shots were fired that close to the event.
