English footballer arrested on suspicion of rape

A former England and Premier League footballer has been arrested on suspicion of rape, a newspaper report said Tuesday.
The suspect, who played for England in the 1920s, was detained at Stansted Airport on the charge of his former partner, according to the official website of the British newspaper "The Sun", before police announced his release on bail pending further investigation.

The former Premier League star was detained at passport control at Stansted Airport, and his details were found to show he was wanted by police in connection with an outdated allegation of attempted rape reported by his former partner. He was stopped by border guards before boarding a low-cost flight on Sunday evening.

A source told the British newspaper: "He was going through passport control when he was stopped by border guards. It was clear there was a problem, and he was taken away."
This follows a complaint filed several weeks ago by the star's former partner, which led to an investigation by Essex Police, in which she alleged that he attempted to rape her during their relationship.

Essex police officers were alerted and proceeded to Stansted Airport to arrest the suspect, whose name cannot be released for legal reasons. He was taken to a local police station where his fingerprints, DNA sample, and photograph were taken.
The suspect, who previously played for the England national team in the second decade of the 21st century, was held in a cell for several hours until his lawyer arrived and investigators came to question him, before he was released on bail pending the investigation.

The player's arrest at the airport caused confusion because he is known to have been attending public events recently, with a source telling The Sun that "it is strange that he was arrested at the airport when he has been very visible in public places recently."
Essex Police stated: A man was arrested on suspicion of attempted rape and has been released on bail until late February 2026, while we continue our investigation.
