Mbappe criticizes Real Madrid players: You don't play at the level of a "champions team".
Kylian Mbappe strongly criticized Real Madrid's players and their inconsistency, saying they do not play like a "champions team" after their 4-2 defeat to Benfica, which resulted in them missing out on the top eight places in the Champions League.
Mbappe scored twice against Benfica in Thursday's match between the two teams at the "Da Luz" stadium, bringing his tally to 13 goals in the Champions League this season.
But Mbappe was unable to prevent the loss that saw Real Madrid drop to ninth place in the standings, meaning they will now face a play-off to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages next month.
Mbappe commented on Real Madrid's defeat against Benfica , saying: "It's not about quality, or tactics, it's about having a greater desire to win than the opponent." He added: "It was clear that everything was at stake for Benfica, while it wasn't clear for us, and that's a problem. Before the match, both teams had a strong motivation to play for: to be among the top eight teams, and for Benfica to be among the top 24 teams. We saw that from Benfica's side, but it didn't show from our side."
He continued, "We are not maintaining our level. We have to find a solution to this problem. We can't win one day and then lose the next. A champion team doesn't do that," as reported by ESPN.
Mbappe concluded his remarks by saying: "In the Champions League, every detail matters if you want to win. Benfica showed that if you don't come here with everything you need to win a Champions League match, your opponent will crush you."
