Google is changing the look of search with new updates.
Google has announced new updates to its AI-powered search experience, including the addition of quotes and links from discussion platforms such as Reddit, blogs, and user sources, in a move aimed at providing broader context to the answers that appear within the “AI Overviews” feature. Google said the new update will show users snippets of public discussions on the internet, social media and direct sources, along with additional information such as the author's name or the name of the digital community associated with the content, to help users evaluate the source of information before interacting with it. This change comes at a time when users are increasingly relying on adding the word "Reddit" to searches to get real-life answers and experiences from other people, especially on technical or specialized topics, according to a report published by TechCrunch and reviewed But the move also reignites the debate about the accuracy of AI search engine results, especially after a series of embarrassing errors that the “AI Overviews” feature has faced since its launch two years ago. Users had previously discovered that the system relied on satirical or misleading content in some of the answers, including advice to eat a small stone daily based on a satirical article from "The Onion," as well as a suggestion to put glue on pizza to fix the cheese, based on a post on "Reddit." Although Google asserts that the “AI Overviews” feature has seen significant improvements, generative artificial intelligence systems are still susceptible to what is known as hallucination, i.e., producing inaccurate or fabricated information. According to a recent analysis published by The New York Times, “AI Overviews” answers were correct in about 9 out of 10 searches. However, for an engine that processes trillions of searches annually, this rate could mean hundreds of thousands of inaccurate results appearing every minute. Through the new update, Google is trying to strike a balance between providing direct answers via artificial intelligence and redirecting users to diverse sources and discussions that may contain the required answer. However, observers believe that this move raises questions about the true role of the “AI Overviews” feature: Is it a tool for direct answers, or just an enhanced version of traditional search results? Google confirmed that adding more information about the sources of quotes will help users verify the reliability of the content, in a similar way to how AI applications like ChatGBT and Cloud do when attaching supporting links to answers. However, technology experts advise users to review the information and check the sources, and not to rely entirely on AI answers, even if they appear to be supported by links and quotes.
