Social media in Turkey has been abuzz for the past two days, since Thursday, after the country's security forces arrested a group accused by authorities of forming a gang for the purpose of financial fraud. However, the way they managed to collect hundreds of thousands of dollars has sparked controversy.

According to details published by Turkish media, Turkish security forces arrested a group that defrauded landowners in the capital, Ankara, after they tricked them into believing that they had discovered alleged golden artifacts that the gang had previously buried in the targeted lands.

According to local media reports, the gang members claimed to be treasure hunters and exploited the victims' ignorance to convince them to buy "artifacts" at high prices, before it was later revealed that they were completely fake.

It is estimated that the gang made about 13 million Turkish lira (equivalent to 300,000 US dollars) from these fraud operations, while the authorities continue to investigate the detainees to uncover their possible partners and the path of the stolen money.

The security authorities are scheduled to transfer the gang members to court soon, where they have been charged with forming an illegal group and engaging in financial fraud.
Turkish authorities have repeatedly warned their citizens about such gangs, especially since some of them use social media and websites for the purpose of making illegal money, but despite that, dozens fall victim to these networks from time to time.
